The incidence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries is increasing among young athletes. These injuries result in significant time out of sport, have a higher recurrence rate than in adult athletes, and a number of athletes that suffer ACL injuries fail to return to their pre-injury level of sport. For female athletes the incidence of ACL injury is higher and return to sport rates are lower than their male counterparts. Despite this, there is a lack of research into the risk factors for ACL injuries in the teenage population and many adult studies have focussed on discrete biomechanical factors. This research will aim to identify population specific risk factors and will utilise a novel, interdisciplinary approach, including factors such as growth and nutrition, which have yet to be explored. It will also look at whether the identified risk factors differ between male and female athletes. Ultimately it will hopefully aid in the screening for those at higher risk of suffering an ACL injury and help to develop injury risk reduction strategies for a uniquely vulnerable population.
