Harmonising Data Collection Strategies for a Cross-European Study Examining Physical Activity Behaviours and their Determinants in Youth

Physical inactivity remains a significant public health concern, with high levels of inactivity prominent across all age groups worldwide. A major challenge in developing effective interventions is the limited availability of robust high-quality datasets on the determinants of physical activity behaviours (PABs). The INDEEP project addresses this gap by harmonising multi-site data collection (MSDC) procedures for PABs and their determinants across Europe. Harmonisation ensures consistency and fidelity in data collection methods, supporting the generation of comparable high-quality data. Process evaluations investigate potential successes and challenges that may occur during implementation. In doing so, implemented data collection measures can be adapted appropriately to further enhance the feasibility, acceptability, fidelity, and scalability of MSDC procedures. Therefore, the aim of Angelicas PhD is to design and implement a process evaluation methodology in a harmonised cross-European data collection study for the examination of PABs and their determinants in youth (the INDEEP Project).

INDEEP is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network coordinated by Dr. Kieran Dowd from the Technological University of the Shannon. INDEEP is building on a decade of evidence which responds to research gaps in relation to the absence of harmonised European datasets on PABs and their determinants. INDEEP is a multi-disciplinary group of 10 PhD students across 6 European countries using novel approaches to target PABs and determinants on multiple socio-ecological levels including: Biological, Individual, Interpersonal, Environmental, Policy, and Socio-Cultural.

Angelica D'Sa, PhD Student

Angelica completed her Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy from Fontys University of Applied Sciences in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. She then went on to complete a Master of Science in Health Education and Promotion from Maastricht University also in the Netherlands. Giving her a strong foundation in understanding complex health behaviours and designing impactful interventions. Her research focus throughout her MSc was on socio-economic differences in dementia risk reduction (https://doi.org/10.1177/13872877251414376).
